November 2025 update
Following our Stage 2 consultation, engagement with energy generators and the progression of ongoing surveys, we are pleased to share our more detailed proposals for Route section 5 – New Weston Marsh Substations A and B.
We are now asking for your feedback on proposals for two new substations – Weston Marsh Substation A and Weston Marsh Substation B – which we will include in our Development Consent Order (DCO) application.
To connect up to 1.6 million UK homes with cleaner energy as soon as possible, we are looking at ways to build part of Weston Marsh Substation A sooner than the rest of the Grimsby to Walpole project. We’re also asking for your views on this earlier phase as part of this consultation.
This consultation focuses on infrastructure around Weston Marsh, and everyone is welcome to take part. Please review our proposals, ask any questions, and share your feedback by 11:59pm on Friday 19 December 2025. Your views will help shape the final design.
About Grimsby to Walpole
Grimsby to Walpole is a 140 km overhead line between Northeast Lincolnshire and North Norfolk, needed to reinforce the network, and to connect new sources of electricity planned in the area, including offshore wind, solar, gas-fired generation, interconnectors, battery storage and subsea links from Scotland.

About The Great Grid Upgrade
The Great Grid Upgrade is the largest overhaul of the grid in generations, enabling the transition to a more secure, reliable energy future. It will enable us to carry more renewable energy from where it is generated to where it is needed, helping to lower bills and improve the country's energy security.
The Grimsby to Walpole proposals form part of The Great Grid Upgrade, helping to enhance the grid's capacity to handle increased renewable energy, ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply.

Why this is needed
The way we generate electricity has changed and is continuing to change. The existing network in the region does not have the capacity to deliver the required amount of electricity to where it is needed across the East Midlands. The existing network, built in the 1960s, is outdated and insufficient for new renewable connections. To meet future demands, we need to reinforce parts of the network.
Grimsby to Walpole is one of five new electricity transmission projects being proposed in Lincolnshire. Three are mainly offshore projects. Grimsby to Walpole is an overhead line project. We require these new reinforcement projects so we can continue to deliver a reliable, affordable network into the future, meet the rising demand for electricity and the connection of new renewable energy sources.
These projects will connect our homes, businesses and public services to sources of home-grown renewable energy which can lower our electricity bills and make our country more energy secure.
Indicative project timeline
The project is currently in the pre-application stage of the national infrastructure planning process. Below is a timeline of the key milestones:
- Stage 1 consultation: January 2024 to March 2024
- Stage 2 consultation: June 2025 to August 2025
- Targeted consultation at Weston Marsh: 18 November to 19 December 2025
- Submission of planning application to South Holland District Council and Section 37 application to Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) for earlier phase of Weston Marsh: Early 2026
- DCO Application Submission: Summer 2027
- Examination: Winter 2027
- Recommendation and Decision: 2028
- Construction of earlier phase of development at Weston Marsh: 2028-2030
- Construction of Grimsby to Walpole: 2029-2033
- Connection of Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind: 2030
